Our Story


A Recognized Brand Since 1968

Tubby’s Sub Shop was founded in 1968 by Richard Paganes at age 21. The first Tubby’s opened in the Detroit suburb of St. Clair Shores at 13 Mile and Harper. His sandwiches were an instant hit!  The now famous Tubby’s Subs with their unique flavor, high quality products, and generous portions quickly became a Detroit area favorite. Richard’s pioneering vision and unwavering commitment to quality products and customer service are the cornerstones of Tubby’s success.

In 1978, the company awarded its first franchise store at 14 Mile and Ryan in Sterling Heights. A number of dine-in locations opened soon after, followed by the first drive-through restaurant in Westland in the early 1980s. Quality of franchisees and store locations rather than the quantity of stores in operation are the guiding rules. This philosophy originates from Tubby’s Sub Shops being a family owned and operated business. The family tradition continues with Robert Paganes, Richard’s brother, who serves as the company's CEO. 

A Deliberate Plan For Growth

In 2006, Robert met Bill Kiryakoza, who would join the Tubby's family in 2010 as a partner and Executive Vice President. Together, they have updated Tubby's stores and brand and have continued the company's tradition of success. Tubby's growth through the years has been at a deliberate pace. Tubby’s currently has more than 60 locations throughout Michigan and is continuing to expand.

For more than 50 years, Tubby’s has built its reputation as the premiere, deli-style, grilled to perfection, steak and cheese sub shop in Michigan, along with the specialty salad line, soups and various side items.

The Addition of Just Baked Creates A Unique, Duel Concept Offering

In 2015, Tubby’s acquired the gourmet cupcake brand,  Just Baked. The Just Baked brand shares a similar reputation with Tubby’s as a Detroit-based company. Since joining Tubby’s, Just Baked has proven to be a profitable addition to Tubby’s product offering. More than creating an additional revenue stream, adding Just Baked creates a very unique “two-in-one” business model, which has attracted an entirely new customer base to Tubby’s.

Tubby’s supports local franchisees by participating in many community events including free concerts, movie nights throughout various community parks and also participates in several annual charitable events. The Tubby’s brand is frequently seen supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association and ALS Foundation.
